OUR HISTORY

Calvary Presbyterian Church of Big Lick was organized in 1921 under the leadership of Mrs. Carrie Murphy, a Presbyterian community worker who came to live and work among the people of Big Lick.

Under the leadership of the Reverend Eugene Smathers the church community built the church building using volunteer labor almost exclusively. The building took 140 days to construct, and was built in the heart of the depression with a budget of $3,000. According to Reverend Smathers, "When the last stone was in place, we still had 40 cents." The building stands as an enduring tribute to the community spirit for which Big Lick is known. It is a building which reflects both the beauty of its surroundings as well as the strength of faith acn character of the people which made it possible.

The church has a long history of community development including sponsering a rural health clinic, The Calvary Church Homestead Project, the little free library and the Annual Big Lick Homecoming.

Those who come to Big Lick and Calvary Presbyterian Church will find an open door and a warm welcome.
